What Happened? Start Here for the Right Help

Different problems need different kinds of companies. Find the line that matches what you're looking at, and follow it for what to do first.

Standing Water on the Floor Right Now

Water spreading across a floor or coming through a ceiling needs to come out fast, before it soaks into walls and the floor below. Stay away from outlets and the panel if the water is near them. If you need an emergency restoration company tonight, start with emergency water removal.

How Undercroft Restoration Works: a Referral Line, Not a Crew

Here's the straight version, because you should know who you're calling.

Undercroft Restoration is a referral service. When you call (201) 409-9820 and give your town and what happened, your call is connected to an independent, third-party company that serves your area and handles that kind of job. That company comes out, inspects, gives you a written scope and does the work.

Undercroft Restoration doesn't do the work, doesn't set prices, and doesn't hold contractor licenses or certifications or show anyone's registration number as its own. What the line does is get you through to the right kind of company, any hour, with one call instead of ten.

When the company calls back or arrives, ask them for:

  • Their NJ home improvement contractor registration number.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • A written scope before any work starts.

Every page on this site is written to help you ask those questions, whoever ends up doing the job.

Restoration Company NJ Homeowners Can Check: What a Good One Does on Your Call

You can't judge a crew by its website, but you can judge it by how it handles the job. A good restoration company:

  • Answers and explains. Someone walks you through the process and answers every question.
  • Puts the scope in writing before work starts, and puts any change in writing too.
  • Measures instead of guessing, with moisture meters and daily readings until things are dry.
  • Keeps you updated after the deposit. The calls shouldn't stop once the deposit clears.
  • Picks up the equipment when drying is done, not days later.
  • Walks you through the final result before walls close up, so you're not the one pointing out what was missed.
  • Doesn't turn a small job into a big one. Honest scope is the clearest sign of a company worth hiring.

Hold whoever you're connected with to that list.

Water Damage, Mold and Waterproofing Restoration Services Across Bergen County

Calls cover three kinds of work: property damage restoration after water gets in, water damage and mold remediation once growth has started, and waterproofing to keep it from happening again.

Every service page follows the same approach: what goes wrong in Bergen County homes, what a proper job looks like step by step, the questions to ask before anyone starts, and honest answers to the questions people actually search. None of them quote prices, because no honest company can price water or mold damage without seeing it.

Why Bergen County Homes Take On Water: River Towns, Old Sewers, Block Basements and High-Rises

The river

The tidal Hackensack River runs down the middle of the county and along Hackensack's eastern edge. River towns have flooded in Sandy, Ida and as recently as April 2022, when the river crested at 8.57 feet at New Milford.

Old sewers

Parts of Hackensack west of the railroad, and parts of Fort Lee and Ridgefield Park, still have combined sewers, where rainwater and wastewater share one pipe. In heavy rain, that pipe fills and sewage can come back up basement drains.

Older homes and block basements

About half of Hackensack's homes were built before 1970, and much of the county was built out in the postwar boom. Block foundations, original sump pits and old footing drains are why so many basements take on water.

High-rises

Along the Palisades and on Hackensack's Prospect Avenue, most water damage is a leak from one unit into the ones below. A supply line on the 18th floor can put water in three apartments, and the super, the condo board and several insurers all get involved.

Bigger downpours

On July 27 and 28, 2026, River Edge recorded 6.06 inches of rain. Six weeks later, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, more than 5 inches fell in about three hours in Paramus and nearby towns. Storms like those overwhelm drains everywhere, not just near rivers.

Starting in Hackensack, Serving All of Bergen County

This site started with Hackensack, the county seat, and was built outward from there. Hackensack has a bit of everything that goes wrong with water in North Jersey: a tidal river on its east side, brooks that flood around Johnson Avenue, combined sewers west of the railroad, pre-war houses in the Fairmount section and high-rises on Prospect Avenue. If a page on this site explains something, it was usually learned there first.

The detailed town guides cover Hackensack, Teaneck across the river, Paramus along the Saddle River, and the Fort Lee high-rises on the Palisades. The county guide lists all 70 towns and where their water problems tend to come from. Calls from every one of those towns are connected the same way, from Mahwah and Montvale in the north to Lyndhurst and North Arlington in the south. Other New Jersey counties will follow.

Remediation Company or Restoration Company? The Words Mean Different Jobs

You'll see both words, and people use them interchangeably. They aren't quite the same. Remediation means removing something harmful: mold, sewage, contaminated floodwater. It involves containment, removing what can't be cleaned and disinfecting what's left. Restoration puts the home back: drying, rebuilding drywall and floors, repainting. Many companies do both, and many jobs need both, usually in that order. You don't need to know which one to ask for. Say what happened, and your call goes to a company that handles it.

08

A Restoration Company New Jersey Renters, Owners and Landlords Can All Call

About 64 percent of Hackensack households rent, and much of the county lives in condos, co-ops and apartments. The call works the same for everyone, but the first step is different:

  • Renters: call your super or landlord first so they can shut off the water and handle the building, then photograph your things and call.
  • Condo and co-op owners: tell management right away; your master deed or proprietary lease decides who fixes what.
  • Landlords and property managers: get each unit documented separately so every tenant, owner and insurer has its own record.
  • Homeowners: find and stop the source, photograph everything, and call.
Questions

What Bergen County Callers Ask Before They Pick Up the Phone

Still have a question?

Calls answered 24/7. Pick the number for your problem, then say your town and what happened.

Is Undercroft Restoration a restoration company?

No. Undercroft Restoration is a referral service. When you call, you're connected with an independent company that serves your town, and that company does the work.

Does the call cost anything?

No. There's no charge to call and no obligation to book anything. If the company you're connected with comes out and you decide not to go ahead, that's your call.

Who will actually come to my home?

An independent, third-party company that serves your area and handles your kind of problem. Ask them for their NJ home improvement registration number, proof of insurance and a written scope.

Which towns do you cover?

All 70 towns in Bergen County, from Hackensack, Teaneck, Paramus and Fort Lee to Mahwah, Ridgewood, Englewood and Lyndhurst. Which companies are available can vary by area and time of day.

Can I call at night, on weekends or on holidays?

Yes. Calls are answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Do you give prices over the phone?

No. Every job depends on what got wet, how much and what kind of water. The company you're connected with will look at the damage and give you a written scope before any work starts.

Will my insurance cover it?

It depends on where the water came from. Sudden pipe bursts are usually covered; floods need a flood policy; sewer backups usually need an endorsement. Photograph everything before it's moved or thrown out, and tell your insurer promptly. The insurance claims help page walks through what to keep and New Jersey's claim deadlines.

I rent. Should I call you or my landlord?

Call your landlord or super first so they can stop the water and handle the building. You can call this line too, especially to get your unit and belongings documented.

Do you handle mold and waterproofing too, or just water?

All three. Calls about mold, waterproofing, sump pumps, French drains, crawl spaces and foundation cracks are connected the same way as water damage calls. Often they're connected problems: a leak that wasn't dried becomes mold, and a basement that floods every storm needs waterproofing after the cleanup.
